Families of Homicide Victims to Celebrate LIFE at 4th Annual Angel Picnic

*** MEDIA ADVISORY ***

The National Homicide Justice Alliance (NHJA), an advocacy group supporting and empowering families who have experienced the long-lasting, devastating and traumatic effects of homicides, will present its 4th Annual Angel Picnic to remember those who lost their lives to the senseless act of homicide, and issue a unified call to action to put a stop to the homicide public health epidemic in Philadelphia.

Despite Mayor Jim Kenny’s new anti-violence campaign, “Philadelphia Roadmap to Safer Communities”, the NHJA has concerns that more is needed, like an initiative designed to carefully consider input from families of homicide victims. Most of the attendees at the Angel Picnic will be survivors of homicide, law enforcement and gun violence prevention activists. We can surely all benefit from trusted communication with those who understand the pain, suffering and the difficulties and frustration of navigating a complicated criminal justice system.

In addition to other critical concerns, the attendees at the Angel Picnic will call on City, State and Federal lawmakers to enact legislation on common sense initiatives for responsible gun legislation, and include the voices of survivors of homicide victims in the development of policies and implementation strategies to stop the leading cause of death for young Black and Brown youth.
